I went to the caucus in Lewiston, ID this evening.
The moderator said that the original plan was to hold the caucus in Dem Headquarters since in 2004 about 125 people showed up, but when he heard that about 250 people might show, he decided to find a bigger place to meet.
I was invited tonight to a reception for Larry Grant, candidate for Congressman of Idaho's first district. It was a beautiful evening here in Northern Idaho and the reception was held on the deck of a lovely home of a Grant supporter. I estimate about 30 or 40 people showed up.
One of the first people I met was Mrs. Grant, the candidate's wife. She seemed like a very nice person. She said they were gearing up for the big push after Labor Day.
I met several candidates for state representative and state senator. It was a very interesting and friendly crowd of supporters who were attending.
One of my New Year's Resolutions is to start doing something again that I got out of the habit of doing with the big move last year.
I know that this community is made up of caring, giving people so I thought that I would put it out there to encourage other Kossacks to consider starting.
Today in the Lewiston Morning Tribune, the first letter to the editor was from a young husband and father of two. In addition to being a student at one of the local colleges, he was a delivery man for a pizza parlour. Being a science major, he placed a bumper sticker on his vehicle that says, "Darwin Loves You." He said he thought it was funny, maybe mildly obnoxious at the most, but no big deal.
I know lots of people here like to trash NPR these days, but tomorrow on Talk of the Nation they are discussing the first blogger admitted to the White House Press Corp and who or what is considered a journalist these days.
The news about the court throwing out Andrea Yates' earlier trial today got me thinking. A previous diary by SophieBrown called "Diary of a Mad Christian Housewife" listed several Fundie Moms Who Kill their own children. For all the talk of family values, it seems a disproportionate number of these women seem to experience severe postpartum depression to the point of psychosis.
For Thanksgiving, we were sharing favorite recipes, libations, etc. Today starts Hanukkah, Christmas will soon be here, followed by Kwanza and New Years.
I just moved to the Snake River Valley this summer (the Lewiston, ID-Clarkston, Wa area). Being a life-long Democrat and moderate liberal, I thought for sure I would have the crap kicked out of me within a month, especially since I tend to be outspoken and rather opinionated.
That hasn't happened yet. I've been rather pleasantly surprised. The local paper, the Lewiston Morning Tribune, is very balanced in carrying both liberal and conservative columns. Their editorial staff tends to the moderate liberal side. No endorsement today, but a very harsh appraisal of the Bush administration's secrecy on the 380 tons of lost ammunition.
