Barbara Boxer Live on C-SPAN 2: "Strength Without Sight"

Tue Dec 20, 2005 at 03:10:27 PM PDT

Barbara Boxer is speaking in Congress right now about the rationale and prosecution of the Iraq War.  She looks tired out, and mad, and she is speaking to the issue of how the war has been presented and sold by this administration.
She is quoting Martin Luther King on balance of powers in American polity.  She is speaking to the White House's shameful attack on John Murtha in his call to begin troop reductions.  She is also speaking to the dirty tricks by the RNC in terms of sliming those who speak out against the war....I don't know if she's working up to a demand for investigation of spying, but she's PISSED....Go Senator Boxer!

  •  Yes, she has gone to (none / 0)

John Dean's assertion that Bush has admitted to an impeachable defense vis a vis the spying.

  •  She was on CNN earlier (none / 0)

but I missed that one too. Do tell us cube dwellers what the great lady is doing...
    •  She's giving the Republicans a right drubbing (none / 0)

about tax cuts versus mental health treatment for PTSD afflicted veterans, among other outrages.

      She's a veritable pistol.

  •  It seems to me that (none / 0)

she is using her time re the budget bill to summarize and highlight the numerous transgressions of this administration.

  •  Now she is talking about (none / 1)

how the "tax cuts for millionaires" are being balanced on the backs of soldiers whose mental health benefits are being cut--as PTSD rates go up.

  •  Waiving a White Flag (none / 0)

Republicans are waiving a white flag over fiscal responsibility and taking care of seniors and over homeland security.  They say all the right things but they don't fund them.  This is great!
  •  Need to Change Course in Iraq (none / 0)

"stay the course?"  The course has got to change.  No connection with 9/11. We're not any safer. (Didn't Howard Dean say that years ago?).  She agrees about importing democracy.  But spreading it at the barrel of the gun won't work.
  •  "We need to change course in Iraq" (none / 0)

Impugning Bush for his false choice: Stay the course or leave in defeat.

Last week's election was important step, but it's time for the Iraqis to control their own country.

It's time for a new policy new strategy, and to put to rest the notion that dissent is unpatriotic.

It's time for a real strategy to stop the spread of terrorism. We can't have real security if we can't prepare for emergencies. Let's honor our military with a clear plan. Let's not run ugly 30 second commercials while our soldiers are hurt...

As usual, she's making eminent sense. Is anyone listening?

  •  She's ending (none / 0)

Mr. President we need to take action.  None of us can remain silent. "it's time to realize ..." and then she goes through a litany.

It's time for a real strategy.  A strong America begins at home.  Don't abandon our children and families, our fiscal responsibilities.  Time to be a shining example for the rest of the world.

  •  A basic call for fiscal sanity in terms of (none / 0)

how we as a country prioritize out budget and spending decisions.  She's done....

  •  Understand (none / 0)

that Senator Boxer had a speech scheduled in CA about Iraq this afternoon. Since she had to be on the floor, she took the opportunity to do it then and there.
As always, she was magnificent, I admire Barbara Boxer tremendously.
  •  Jon Kyl (none / 0)

spoke much more convincingly than i expected, not that i was convinced.  but he seemed to make the case for the Act better than even Bush does sometimes.  guess that's not a very high bar though...
  •  If you changed your title (none / 0)

this could be an open thread to follow the debate, which will continue for some time.
